How to Wash and Care for a Human Hair Wig
Step-by-step: how to wash, condition, dry and store a human hair wig so the hair and lace last.
Updated 5 November 2026

Step by step
- Detangle gently with a wide-tooth comb, from the ends up.
- Rinse in lukewarm water, holding the wig with the hair pointing down.
- Apply a little sulphate-free shampoo and smooth it downwards; do not rub or twist.
- Rinse, then apply conditioner from mid-lengths to ends for a few minutes, keeping it off the lace.
- Rinse in cool water, press out water with a towel and let it dry on a wig stand.
- Style once dry, using a heat protectant.
How often
Every 7–10 wears for most people, sooner in humid weather or if you use a lot of product.
Storing your wig
Keep it on a stand or in its box, away from direct sun and heat. Human hair lasts 3–5 years with proper care.
