How to Match Your Hair Extension Colour
How to choose the right human hair shade for extensions or a wig: lighting, where to match and how shade numbers work.
Updated 5 November 2026

Three rules
- Match in natural daylight, by a window, not under indoor lights.
- Match to the lengths and ends of your hair, where the extensions will show, not the roots.
- If your hair has two tones, match the shade that covers most of the length; we can advise from a photo.
Understanding shade numbers
Lower numbers are darker: #1 is the darkest black, #1B a softer natural black, #2 to #12 browns, #14 to #27 caramels and blondes, with #12, #18 and #22 the cooler ash tones.
